"An Evening of Ideas..."
Last Thursday, at the one and only Venture Cafe St. Louis, an organization which hosts weekly gatherings of innovators, techies, thought leaders and more, Brian Dixon of Capital Innovators and Ben Burke of Arch Grants "enlightened" their audience on how to make an idea into reality. Needless to say, the room was packed and well into the one hour segment there were lines of individuals outside trying to get in on just what these two entrepreneurs had to say.
Burke and Dixon realized they shared many of the same outlooks and perspective on life which are all counter to the mainstream and decided to collaborate and speak on the very core of what actually happens when ideas are brought into form and how both Burke and Dixon have evolved with their core beliefs and applied them to their careers right here in St. Louis, Missouri.
The main concept of the evening was how our thoughts, emotions, ideas, attitude, perspective on failure, abundance, and synchronicity all play an integral part in how our ideas are brought into form/reality whether for better or worse.
Burke kicked off the evening by discussing/defining each of the seven elements by engaging the audience to help pitch in and define what each of these words means to them.
Dixon pitched in about how all of these elements have helped him delve deeper into his spiritual side which has catapulted his career to heights he hadn’t even dreamed of.
Dixon was always into the law of attraction reads, such as “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill and "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. After continually seeking out more and more knowledge on the topic (which was over the course of the last 6-7 years) he started to complete the calls to action that he felt pulled towards and really began to apply what he would learn. Of course, the more he practiced the more quickly things began to shift for the better in his life.
He acknowledged he wasn’t happy in legal work but also knew he wanted to be excited about his work and whole. He had a strong desire and belief in a career he would enjoy doing. He asked for signs and sure enough, he was given a sign and guidance in which direction to pursue. Because Dixon was emitting a more positive and grateful attitude despite his unhappiness with his career, he was putting more good out than bad. He was sending out hopeful energies and believed in what he wanted to feel and have truly existed and that he could and would have it.
One day while driving into work, Dixon noticed a bumper sticker on a car that said “Life’s short. Venture out.” Sure enough by the simple fact that he had asked for a sign, his strong belief that he could do better and be better and believed in himself, he had noticed the sign and immediately took to the emotion it brought to him and acted upon it by walking into work and giving his two weeks. From then on the rest is history as he ends up interning with Capital Innovators within less than 6 months and is now the COO.
Dixon’s journey hasn’t stopped there. He shared that as he started really paying attention to his thoughts and only focusing on what he wanted to see happen he would notice signs pointing him in the right directions. The more he kept a level head, a clear mind, and a grateful attitude he noticed nothing would get him upset or down. If anything on the outside did happen that didn’t sit well with him he would mentally visualize it passing away like a cloud and become very unbothered by the situation. This helped him to steer clear of negative emotions and instead of impulse reactions, he would have very well thought out, calm, cool, collected responses to whatever his personal or professional life would bring him. He used this “internal guide” to help him navigate through his career and help close deals just by tuning into the appropriate frequency of his thoughts, attitude, and emotions.
“Your emotions come in response to your thoughts. So a feeling is a manifestation because it’s coming in response to a thought. If you care about the way you feel, you will find a way to redirect your thoughts. It really is as simple as that.”
Burke went in depth about the process of those elements and how they interrelate to each other and how we as humans are programmed to overlook the relationship between all but how excruciatingly important and imperative it is that we purposefully and actively pay attention to our thoughts (always make sure you think about what you DO want). For demonstrative purposes, Burke used the thought/idea of a pink elephant. "Let’s think a thought; “pink elephant.” "Now pay attention to your emotion behind that thought. How do you feel when thinking about that pink elephant? A description of how you feel; love, fear, joy etc. It (feeling or emotion) is separate from the visual from the expression of the idea from the words pink elephant. There is an emotional connection or not. You automatically tie the emotion to the thought/idea but in reality, that emotion is actually separate from that thought or idea. The idea is something that typically takes thoughts and emotions in a complex way, for ideas, you want to bring into form (since that is what the subject of the topic was) that’s a combination of the two."
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
Attitude is essentially an unfiltered expression of your beliefs. Your beliefs exist foundation-ally behind all of this but basically, your attitude is an expression of your most commonly held thoughts emotions and ideas including the idea of what you believe yourself to be. The expression of yourself, your self-awareness, how you view yourself, all of it, is an idea that you are holding fundamentally either consciously or subconsciously within yourself. And that is expressed in many ways through attitude. So when you see someone or interact with someone who is very positive, upbeat and always has a good attitude, there is a pretty good chance their idea of themselves is pretty positive.
“So when you see someone or interact with someone who is very positive, upbeat and always has a good attitude, there is a pretty good chance their idea or belief of themselves is pretty positive.”
Failure is basically a reflection of something you have an opportunity to see from a different perspective. It’s the idea of failure, that you register something it means something to you. It didn't work, it's learning, it's anxious, etc all of these are made up. You made them up and applied this definition to failure all negative; all because of a word that is made up and you chose to give it a definition. Failure is just an experience you are having. It’s only a reflection of something you have an opportunity to see/experience from a different perspective. Nothing about emotions, thoughts, ideas or attitude. It is simply a mirror that is up in the world, in your experience, that you are having. You have the opportunity to see it from a different perspective if you choose to do so.
“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”
Abundance is options. It's plenty. You have a lot of everything and anything. Abundance is having exactly what you need, to do exactly what you want to do, exactly when you want to do it. Abundance is you can see, therefore you can experience, therefore bring in exactly what you need, for exactly what you want to do, exactly when you want to do it. In many cases, it can come through money but it can come through other things as well; almost anything can come in abundance. Dixon mentioned that abundance also means different things to each one of us. Being in an entrepreneurial space, he sees the definition of abundance can mean many different things to each person and can vary person to person, business to business. For some, it may mean money for others freedom with their time. It can be anything, any kind of resource. It’s the cup overflowing. Burke reiterated that "abundance is you cannot help but share, you cannot help but create you cannot help but help bring more ideas into form, that’s just your vibration. It’s the state of where you are."
“Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.”
Synchronicity is the last element mentioned where Dixon shared his personal experiences with synchronicity and defined it as “there is no such thing as coincidence.” “What we call a coincidence, is actually synchronicity.” Everything that happens to us on a daily basis has been predetermined based on states of consciousness for us, however, it is up to you to follow the signs. One key element for recognizing synchronicity/signs is trying to stay mindful and present at the moment. We are always so scatterbrained, so busy with everything, it's almost as if our minds are used to chaos, noise and always jumping to what has to be done next even though physically and mentally we are needed right here in the moment. It’s easy to clutter up one’s mind with all the emails, texts, tweets and not be focused on exactly what’s going on at that moment. However, one can only notice these synchronicities when they are mindful, aware, present in the moment and pay attention to the signs. A very effective way of staying present, mindful and aware in the moment is by meditating every morning before work and evening before bed. This practice helps quiet your mind and move through the day with more ease and comfort.
“Synchronicity is choreographed by a great, pervasive intelligence that lies at the heart of nature, and is manifest in each of us through intuitive knowledge.”
Meditation has scientifically backed research and studies which all show it literally helps the brain expand and make quicker, much more clear and concise connections when thinking or visualizing something. Therefore making the individual much calmer, yet focused, much more productive yet effective, moving faster yet slower in a sense. Meditation helps the brain function in a more expanded, abundant, calm clear manner. Therefore, able to be present in a confident way in every unfolding moment also noticing the signs/synchronicities more. Dixon refers back to the sign he saw on the bumper sticker when wondering about his future. However, he credits his ability to be able to ask for and notice the signs because of his mental awareness which he maintained through an optimistic view. Because of this attitude, he was also more aware, more present while asking the universe for a sign about his future. He explained he was in a neutral place in his mind and heart. It was at that moment he noticed the bumper sticker “Life’s short. Venture out.” He was not stressing, texting, emailing while driving, or thinking about every possible terrible situation that could go wrong, instead he was asking for some guidance and was present in the moment, therefore receptive and clear-minded enough to notice the sign and actually take intuitive action upon the sign as opposed to writing it off as a coincidence.
There are steps that can be taken to use our minds and bodies to their highest maximum potential so that we aren’t always anxious or scatterbrained but instead cool, calm, inspired, aware, acting, thinking and feeling from a place of “plenty” or abundance, very confident in our goals and desires and just all around more positive and relaxed and relieved in everything we do in our daily lives. Some of these helpful practices are physical exercise, removing fluoride from your water, removing meat and dairy from your diet (although for some this may feel extreme, but should be researched), be more conscious about what you eat and drink and make smarter choices in your daily life. Although this may all seem strange to some, it IS the key to utilizing your body and mind to its highest potential and leveraging one o the most advanced technologies in the universe...our consciousness.
“Meditation means dissolving the invisible walls that unawareness has built.”
According to Dixon, one of the most helpful practices for him is meditating every morning and evening. Although it takes some getting used to, and maybe even some research on how to go about meditating, and the purpose behind its practice it is ultimately a life-changing addition to one's life. And just like exercising, meditating easily becomes a huge part of your daily life once you begin to see the benefits of it.
“Where there is peace and meditation, there is neither anxiety nor doubt.”
-St. Francis De Sales
Tying it all together and how all these elements help to bring an idea into form, Burke explicitly states “whatever components, whether positive or negative your thoughts and emotions are what is behind that idea or essentially what that idea is made up of.” For example, if you have a positive thought with positive emotion which leads to an idea then it will be positive. However, if you have a negative thought with negative emotion you will think a negative idea. These parts are what make the idea. Your thoughts and emotions are what is creating this idea. Any idea you have is made up of thoughts or emotions but only you can ascribe to them to be positive or negative by being consciously aware. In Burke’s experience, people have an idea and they are excited about that idea, the more that you identify with this one idea, the more you place your identity within it, the more you place yourself into this idea box. The idea of the ideas is you want it to come into form. It’s really hard for an idea to come into form when you are identifying with one particular narrative idea of that idea. You have one particular way you think that idea can come into form. And by doing that what you are doing is blocking off every other idea related to that idea that could help bring your idea into form. All because you are identifying with a particular narrative or story of how that idea can come into form. You are literally closing yourself off to any other possible ways for that idea to come into form. You are essentially placing your idea in the idea box. You are boxing yourself into that idea.
The best entrepreneurs have ideas and don’t box themselves in them. This way they are allowing the idea to live through them instead of forcing the idea into creation. The idea lives through you and comes as energy through you as a person. If you think about your idea this way you can have idea sex. Yes, you read that correctly, idea sex. Then you have another person with an idea which is similar to yours, but if you are too closed off in your box you won’t see the value of the synchronicity of meeting this person who has a similar idea as you with the same passion as you, so the idea is you want to have idea sex. This is what entrepreneurs do. They have ideas and they have to get these ideas out. Some entrepreneurs even close off and don’t share their ideas out of fear that someone will steal their idea or people won’t believe in their idea. The ideas you have are up there in a cloud, they are made out of thoughts and emotions either positive or negative, if you believe and integrate the idea that ideas are made up of thoughts and emotions then the more people you can get to have that idea the more energy, thoughts, and emotions will be poured into this idea. So how do you bring an idea into form? You bring as much thought, as much emotion, into this idea and then once you have a lot of people thinking the same idea, that idea has now significantly more inertia, more energy, more ability to come into form. The worst thing you can do is not share your idea. If you want to kill an idea keep it to yourself. If you want to bring an idea into form share it with as many people you can. Then the key is the skill, how to get people to think positively and emit positively about your idea so that the idea of self and others is even pouring more positive and energy into this idea.
“If you want to kill an idea keep it to yourself. If you want to bring an idea into form share it with as many people you can.”
The idea of abundance and synchronicity are only relative to those people who are open to those ideas. So as to say if you don't believe abundance is real you won't have any. If you don't believe in synchronicity and think everything is just a coincidence and has no meaning, then you won't have any meaning or synchronicity. You want more people giving more positive energy, more positive emotions with the beliefs same as yours to the idea which help it come into form. This is the HOW. This is the How will we bring the idea into form. You will have a reflection of how you are thinking about this idea and how it will come to form. For example, if you are thinking I can't wait for this idea to happen, it’s not going to happen. You have to actually think and act as if the idea has already happened. Saying to yourself this idea "has happened this is how I feel now" etc. another example, waiting for a partnership deal to be signed, you don’t sit there and say “I can't wait for this deal to be signed.” you can’t say that or think that. The universe will give you, reflect right back to you that you can’t wait for the deal to be signed. You’ll be in limbo. You'll be waiting for it be signed. You must say, think and feel the deal is signed. I am grateful I feel great I created so much value from this deal" and visualize it as if it already manifested for you. If you start emitting this frequency the universe will be water and it will move around with you and work with you to help deliver you your ideas and desires for you. It’ll become so easy for you to manifest your ideas into form.
Some skills to take away for bringing an idea into form:
- You have an idea don't box yourself in; don't tell yourself it’s the only way the idea can come to fruition. Go back and think about the thoughts and emotions that birthed the idea in your head. The thoughts and emotions behind your idea are much more foundational and purposeful and should help you get out of your idea box. Be open to other ideas coming in from others or yourself.
- Write your idea down on paper and present it to people. Share it with people with a lot of positive emotions and energy about the idea.
- Don’t focus on the how. The "how" is simply not your task yet. The "how will be shown to you at the right time in the right way. You don't want to disconnect from the creative vibration mode (which is the idea being shared, thought about, spoken about with positive emotions and energy).
- Ask for guidance
- Be present and aware of signs and synchronicities
- Overshare ideas so as long as your intent is to act and execute on the idea once you are calmly guided to do so. These are called thoughts without effort. It is your intuition that steps in and leads on the path of how to go about executing the idea.
- Be very observant in your daily life and practice gratitude.
- View “failures” very objectively. If possible don’t even define them. Move on and focus your attention and energy on more positive and more important things in your life like on what you can do now versus what has happened in the past already. Detach your emotions from anything that makes you think of the word failure. Let it go as if it were a cloud passing by. This prevents suffering and helps you be more positive in your attitude towards life instead of dragging you down emotionally and causing you to have a terrible attitude, taking your attention away making you all scatterbrained, not present and not aware. Becoming grateful for all that is right and good. In other words, count your blessings. This increases the positive energy in your attitude.
Keep in mind attitude is huge. If you are trying to change or figure out what attitude you emit most of the time just look at what you believe in about yourself. Turn your consciousness around and "face" yourself. Really look at your beliefs about yourself, and you will see why your general attitude is the way it is. But know this for certain, you have the power to change your beliefs about yourself so as to have an upbeat, optimistic, and positive attitude. So if you don't like what your beliefs are about yourself and want a more positive attitude about yourself and emit pure opulence about yourself then start writing down amazing, positive beliefs about yourself and mentally, or out loud read them to yourself, again and again, every single day. You will immediately feel vibrant and within months of doing so, you will be to attract great things and people into your life by changing your beliefs and emitting a positive attitude out into the world.
In the famous words of Zig Ziglar, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” We can all take small steps to improve ourselves, to improve our lives. No action taken to better ourselves is ever wrong. It takes a conscious decision to want to be or become a little better than yesterday. It’s called progress. It’s not perfection. We don't aim for perfection. We aim for progress in our ability to continue to be our true, authentic, creative, expressive selves. Here are some tips on how to get started on strengthening your intuition and trusting your heart a little more and applying it to all/any areas of your life.
